Shout it from the (solar-powered) rooftops! New campaign helps families use home upgrade credits before they expire
The Save on Better Appliances campaign is helping households future-proof their energy bills.
Aug. 25, 2025—Three years after the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Rewiring America is launching the Save on Better Appliances campaign, a nationwide effort to help homeowners lock in valuable energy tax credits before they expire at the end of 2025, while also showcasing new pathways to long-term energy affordability.
With energy costs on the rise, the campaign emphasizes how modern electric appliances — like heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and rooftop solar — can help families cut bills, boost comfort, and protect themselves from future price shocks.
Americans are feeling the squeeze from record-high energy costs, driven by extreme heat, rising demand from data centers, and stubborn inflation pressures. For many families, energy-efficient appliances represent one of the only ways to regain control over household costs, a benefit that endures even after federal incentives expire. Beyond the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) and Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D), there are still thousands of state, local, and utility-level incentives available to help families bring down upfront costs and make these critical upgrades possible.
"These popular federal credits were designed to be available when American families needed them,” said Ari Matusiak, CEO of Rewiring America. “Congress’s decision to repeal them prematurely means households should act fast. But the savings, comfort, and long-term value of these upgrades remain. For homeowners ready to act, we have the tools to help. And for those who need more time, we’re working to expand your options and ensure that these upgrades make financial sense whenever the moment is right."
The Save on Better Appliances campaign will run through the end of October and includes:
A central hub where homeowners can learn more about the expiring federal tax credits, explore additional state, local, and utility incentives, and find trusted contractors.
Weekly Zoom drop-in sessions with Certified Electric Coaches — free, informal guidance to help homeowners troubleshoot the complexities of making energy-efficient home upgrades. Sign up for the first session on Wednesday, September 3 here!

A national storytelling push from contractors and homeowners who know firsthand the comfort, health, and pocketbook benefits of these upgrades.
Tax credits are just one tool to make home energy upgrades more affordable. That’s why Rewiring America is partnering with manufacturers, contractors, and lenders to offer specially priced heat pump packages in Rhode Island and Colorado, with more locations to come. These offers are available now and will expand in 2026 and beyond, lowering upfront costs and expanding access — no matter what happens in Washington.
Across the country, state agencies, utilities, local governments, and nonprofit coalitions are leading additional creative solutions to help families save money, access trusted contractors, and take the first steps toward electrification. This campaign is designed to lift up and align with those efforts, amplifying the innovative work already underway.
“When we first bought our house, the energy bills were jarring. We knew we couldn’t afford to keep filling the oil tank. Thanks to the 25C tax credit, we were able to install a far more efficient and affordable heat pump system last winter,” said Annie Goodenough, a homeowner in Alaska. “We recommend other first-time homeowners who are looking to lower costs and improve the overall comfort of their home take advantage of the tax credits while they can. Now that we're a little more settled, I'm excited to take advantage of other tax incentives to install more insulation ahead of winter so our home will be even more efficient!"
“I’ve been doing HVAC installations for the past 40 years, and I can tell you that I’ve seen firsthand how the 25C tax credit has made heat pumps, the most efficient HVAC technology, more affordable and accessible for homeowners. It drove so much business that I was able to form my whole company, Royal River Heat Pumps, around installing just that appliance,” said Scotty Libby, owner of Maine-based Royal River Heat Pumps. “Homeowners should talk to their local contractors now if they want to upgrade their HVAC, take advantage of the tax credit, and lock in the potential long-term energy savings a heat pump would provide.”
"High energy bills are squeezing families across America, and they need practical solutions now,” said Rep. Kathy Castor. “These federal tax credits have helped households save money and upgrade to modern appliances that cut monthly bills and improve comfort. I applaud Rewiring America for helping families act before these critical credits vanish. I am not giving up on helping Americans save money and protect their homes.”
“These clean energy tax credits have helped American families and businesses save money, and now is the time to take full advantage of them,” said Climate Mayors chair Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “We have a narrow window to get the word out and help our communities benefit from these proven, popular credits which are making clean energy more affordable and accessible across the country.”
“Federal tax credits often make electrification more accessible for many families and give contractors another tool to help projects pencil out economically,” said Dave Boettcher, CEO of Massachusetts-based Abode Energy Management. “Right now is a critical window to educate families and contractors about the benefits of tax credits before they disappear. It’s important that families know they need to find a qualified contractor soon to get their project installed before the end of the year and start realizing the benefits of cleaner, healthier, more comfortable heating and cooling.”
“We’re already seeing a surge in demand as homeowners rush to lock in the 25C and 25D incentives before they disappear. Households that want to take advantage should act now — once they’re gone, they’re gone,” said DR Richardson, co-founder of Elephant Energy. ”But the need for affordable, efficient electric homes won’t go away in 2026, and at Elephant, we’re making electrification simple and cost-effective for the long run.”
“Tax credits may expire, but the benefits of better HVAC — lower bills, healthier homes, and lasting comfort — are here to stay. That’s why we’re supporting Rewiring America’s campaign,” said Bill Spohn, Sr., President, The Better HVAC Alliance.
"Heat pumps represent the future of home comfort – they're incredibly efficient, delivering up to 400% efficiency while providing both heating and cooling in one elegant system," said Paul Lambert, CEO of Quilt. "The 25C tax credit has been instrumental in helping homeowners discover just how transformative this technology can be. We've created a new resource and neighborhood awareness campaign to ensure as many families as possible can experience the magic of heat pumps before these valuable federal incentives expire at year's end."
“Even as we continue the fight to restore these tax credits, contractors have a golden opportunity to help their customers upgrade to more efficient equipment and more comprehensive home upgrades,” said Sean Robertson, vice president of membership, advocacy, and events at Air Conditioning Contractors of America. “Smart contractors can use Rewiring America’s tools and the urgency of a year-end deadline to get customers off the fence, driving premium business through the shoulder season.”
“Insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve home energy performance — and one of the easiest upgrades to complete before the 25C tax credit expires,” said Jonathan Belanus, President of the Insulation Contractors Association of America. “Rewiring America’s campaign will help homeowners understand their options, find qualified contractors, and act before valuable tax credits expire. These are the kinds of resources families need to improve comfort and cut waste, especially before winter hits.”
“Rewiring America’s timely campaign will help families facing skyrocketing utility bills access safe, clean energy appliances,” said Lisa Hoyos, LCV Senior Director for Climate and Clean Energy. “Affordable rooftop solar and heat pumps are game changers for every community — cutting costs for households and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.”
“Our governors are committed to spreading the word on how consumers can lower their energy bills through these expiring tax credits, and we welcome this effort from Rewiring America,” said U.S. Climate Alliance Executive Director Casey Katims. “The clock is ticking and now is the time for Americans to upgrade to better, cleaner tech and save money.”
"Clean energy tax credits have played a critical role in lowering energy costs, creating jobs, and reducing climate pollution. Our nationwide network of grassroots volunteers will be sharing Rewiring America's resources in their local communities, encouraging homeowners to maximize those benefits before the credits expire," said Ricky Bradley, Interim Executive Director of Citizens' Climate Lobby.
"Going solar helps families save money by taking control of where their energy comes from," said Anya Schoolman, Executive Director, Solar United Neighbors. "A lot of folks are looking to do so before the tax credit expires. We are ready to help guide them so they can go solar with confidence."
