Exporting oil and gas does not create energy independence, electrification does.
Exporting oil and gas does not create energy independence, electrification does.
Even though the United States now exports more oil and gas than it imports (often called “energy independence”), we remain very dependent on world energy markets, buying and selling fossil fuels at prices we don’t control. There are technical, economic, and political reasons for this, but the result is the same: global fossil fuel price volatility exposes everyday Americans to economic hardship, a fact laid bare by the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
There is, however, a path to true energy independence: full electrification powered by renewable energy. This not only results in low, stable energy prices, but also combats the existential threat of climate change.

Electrification Caucus Co-Chairs and Members Call on FERC to Improve Grid Reliability and Lower Energy Costs
“We have technologies we can deploy today to reduce household energy bills, improve reliability, create jobs, and cut harmful carbon pollution. We urge you to take next steps as expeditiously as possible to upgrade and expand our electric grid to enable power sharing across regions and the connection of more affordable and abundant renewable energy to power our homes, businesses, and vehicles at lower costs.”
Circuit Breaker Series: Heat Pumps emit less than high efficiency gas appliances in nearly every household in America.
Heat pumps are the cleaner choice. Even under conservative DOE minimum efficiency standards and 100-year global warming potentials, 98% of U.S. households would cut their carbon emissions by installing a heat pump.

Fact Sheet: What’s at Stake
Forty-two percent of U.S. energy-related emissions come from our homes and the machines we use every day: the cars we drive, how we heat and cool our homes, how we heat our water, dry our clothes, and cook our meals. We stand no chance of staying inside of 1.5°C warming unless we electrify our lives.
Three Coalitions Have Launched
